The Limbo Meme

You’re not sure how it happened, or maybe you are. Was it a hero’s death, or the desperate last moments of a coward? Maybe you died to protect someone, maybe you fell on your own sword, maybe you passed away peacefully in your bed one night, or maybe you were taken out by force. Whatever the reason, you are now neither here nor there, no pearly gates or brimstone in sight. This is what they call “limbo”, a liminal space made not to exist in, but to pass through on your way to a more finite destination. Even so, there’s no telling how long you might be stuck here, nor who you might encounter.
Directions:
-create a top level, either blank or with a prompt or preferences
-select a number, letter, or combination of the two from the lists below if you wish
-tag others and enjoy being dead
(OTA all canon characters and OCs)
How long have you been here?
1. Newly dead; You haven’t been here long. Maybe you don’t remember how you got here, or maybe you do. You might be scared, confused, disheartened, or even relieved. You’re not the only one drifting through this strange place, so maybe you should ask a familiar - or unfamiliar - face what’s going on.
2. Getting your footing; You’re not exactly a seasoned death veteran, but you’ve been here a while, and whether you like it or not, you’re almost starting to get used to this place - but when will it be time to move on? And who’s that new person who just arrived? That person in the corner has been here as long as you have, if not longer. Maybe you should talk to them.
3. A seasoned spirit; You’ve been here for years, or decades, or centuries. Perhaps you’ve learned how to drift in and out with how long you’ve been dwelling in this strange place. You could give a newbie some advice, or maybe ease the frustration of someone who has been here not quite long enough to accept what their existence has become - that they’ll become you. Then again, maybe you’re just angry you’re still stuck here at all.
What are you doing?
A. Asking questions; How did you get here? How did you die? Will you ever see your family or friends again? Is that one of them? When will you move on to the next stage? Who’s that weird guy standing in the corner over there? You’ve got questions and you want answers.
B. Facing your killer; You know how you got here, you know who’s responsible, but do you know exactly what you’d have to say to them if you saw them? Well, you better figure it out - they’re standing right in front of you.
C. Facing your victim; Well, this is awkward. At some point in the past, you made a decision, and now that decision has quite literally come back to haunt you. The person for whom’s death you are responsible is standing right in front of you, and they are probably going to want some answers
D. A familiar face; Maybe you’re new here, or maybe you’ve been here for years; either way, you’ve just seen a familiar face, whether it be a long lost loved one, or someone you never expected to follow you so soon in death. What will you say to them?
E. Wildcard; Go crazy! Any number of things can happen when your soul is trapped between dimensions. Strike up a conversation with a stranger, explore any strange new powers you might discover as a ghost, haunt one of the living, etc. The possibilities are endless!

[So it’s a good thing that he doesn’t plan for a single moment to stay this way. And that energy is positively unwavering.
[At the mention of his friends though, Ren stiffens a bit. It’s only with his eyes that he glances around, and only just enough to see what he’s looking for. They don’t appear to be here - wherever here is - and that is a decidedly good thing.
[Even so, he can’t help but wonder if they made it out where he couldn’t.
[His eyes go back to Akechi. The truth of the matter is, he doesn’t know, but saying that feels like something of a defeat, and he doesn’t like that feeling. But he doesn’t want to lie either.
I don’t know.
[They got out. They must have. It’s not like he saw it happen, but they must have.
[And he will too. He’ll find a way to get back to them. And he’ll stop Shido.
[There simply isn’t another option. He adjusts his answer.]
Fighting.
[They wouldn’t give up and he knows that. So if they’re not here, then they’re either still in the metaverse, or regrouping to find out what step to take next. Still fighting either way. To him it’s as good as true.]

If you're here, I expect you'll find them soon enough.
[The Phantom Thieves without their leader? Please. They might all have their own strengths, some more than others (Makoto and Futaba, for example, much more than Ryuji or Ann), but without their leader, he expects they'll be paralyzed.
A muscle in his jaw twitches. In spite of everything, he really doesn't want to reunite with the Phantom Thieves. Not here. For one thing, they're much too noisy when he'd finally gotten used to the silence.]
Did you at least manage to change Shido's heart?
[He coats his words in as much derision as possible in an attempt to hide his desperation.]

[Guilt, an unwelcome break from the steadfast feeling of determination he’s been fostering. Akechi’s final - dying, Ren now realizes - wish, left unaddressed. The churning in his gut tightens painfully.
[And he shakes his head.]
Not yet.

Turns out if there's one thing that can still make him angry, it's Ren fucking Amamiya. Figures.]
If you weren't already dead, [he hisses, stopping short just before making contact. His fingers have flexed his gauntlets into talons, tendons hurting from the tension in his hands, but he doesn't touch the other boy.] I'd kill you again myself. All the fucking deals you've made, and you couldn't uphold mine.

[Ren repeats this firmly, and his posture remains straight and steady, steeled steadfastly even as Akechi approaches him with a hand aimed for his throat. He doesn’t back down, only stares into the other boy’s eyes, no glasses in place to hide the fire that burns behind them.]
I promised.
It will happen.

Instead he clenches his fists until the points of his claws dig into his own palms. He wants to believe Ren so badly -- Ren speaks with such conviction that he almost can. But nothing works out that easily. It never has.]
You're dead, [he snarls, anger giving way to bitterness.] You're dead, you failed, and your fucking troupe of idiots are going to join us here sooner than you'd think.
[The anger ebbs away, leaving in its wake the same exhaustion and hopelessness he's felt since the end of their fight in the engine room of that damned Palace.]
no subject
[The idea that his friends will soon be joining him is unbearable, and he feels his fists clench at his sides at the thought. It’s too much to bear, and the exhausted, hope-drained look on Akechi’s face only makes it all the worse.]
Goro.
[The uncharacteristically familiar name seems to echo off the space around them, firm and louder than Akechi has probably ever heard Ren speak. He wants him to hear him. He wants him to believe him when he says:]
Don’t underestimate them.
[Because even if he is dead, even if he can’t find a way, they will. He knows they will.]
