The (Forced) Speed Dating Meme

Maybe You Want to Be Here, Maybe You Don't
But You're Here!

It's as the tagline says. Maybe you want to be here - have a few laughs, get to know some new people, make new friends, maybe take someone home - or, maybe you don't. Either way, you're here, complete with a name tag, a list of preferences, and a mysterious magical force that's keeping you from leaving. Whether compelled to sit at your table and wait for your next match, or to visit tables yourself, it's time to partake in a thrilling game of speed dating. And no, you don't have a choice, so you might as well make the most of it.

How to Play:
- Make a top level with your character name and canon in the subject line. Include in your top level what's written on your character's tag. You may use this format if you wish:

Feel free to assume that your character filled it out themselves, or that it was magically filled out for them when they arrived and they aren't able to remove it. Whatever suits your character best!

- Assume your character is either seated at a table awaiting matches, freely exploring the room, or being propelled by some otherworldly force to mingle. That is to say, tag around to other top levels and speed date away!

- It may be a good idea to put in your top-level some preferences for whether you are looking for shippy threads, friendship threads, funny threads, etc.. whatever you'd like!

- Tag around, have fun, be respectful, follow basic dwrp rules, etc.!

Anyone and everyone is welcome, including fandom characters, fandom OCs, canon OCs, AUs, CRAUs, etc.! Feel free to spread the word and thanks for playing!

I ain't too picky I guess. As long as they're fun to be around and can keep up with me then I can't complain too much.

[ yuji nods, already trying to figure out if anyone he's met here so far matches ryuji's ideal partner ]

For guys... [ he pauses, not having thought about this yet. ] Also tall with a big butt?

[ Ryuji nods sagely. ]

I see, I see! So I guess you're an ass man, huh? [ he leans in, equally as curious to know more. this is a conversation between men now. ]

Anyone caught your eye then?

Yeah, you can say that. [ he mimics ryuji's nod and grins knowingly. ]

[ with his arms resting on the table and palm cradling his chin, yuji thinks about the question. ]

So far everyone's been real cool. You seem real cool.

For real?! You think I'm cool? [ awwe ] You seem like a pretty cool guy yourself!

[ Ryuji's only known Yuji for less than an hour but already he can tell this guy's rad as hell. ]

Got any equally as cool hobbies? [ a cool guy's gotta have a few cool hobbies right? ]

Hell yeah! Thanks, man. [ he grins brightly, happy to take the compliment. ]

I'm pretty good at sports. [ does being good at something count as a hobby? ] Oh, I like watching movies. Any kind of movie. Action, romance, horror, you name it.

What about you?

You do sports too? [ at this rate, Yuji might just become his new best friend. sorry Ren. ] Track was more my thing, but I'll give any sport a try. [ leg permitting, but he doesn't have to get into that right now.

[ but what else does he do? Ryuji has to think about it for a moment. his gut instinct is of course to talk about being a phantom thief (if one can consider that a hobby), but maybe he should be a little more careful about how much information he reveals about them. maybe he should try to play the part of an 'honest high school student' for once. then again, Yuji doesn't seem like a bad guy, so really what's the risk? ]

And I'm always down for a good movie too, or hitting up the arcade when I've got the time. Oh! And if you're ever down to grab a bowl of ramen? I'm totally your guy! [ he seems especially excited about that last one. a little too excited. or maybe he's just hungry. ]

But I gotta say, doin' stuff with the Phantom Thieves keeps me pretty busy these days.

[ he just couldn't resist, could he? ]

[ yuji looks excited at the progress of their conversation. it really feels like they're vibing well! ]

Arcades are always fun! And I love ramen!! Dude, there are so many things we can do together. We should definitely hang out after this.

[ yuji cocks his head to the side at the mention of phantom thieves. he's never heard of them before but it sounds... really cool. ] Phantom Thieves? Is that your band name?

Duuuude that'd be awesome! I'm down! Actually [ Ryuji pulls out his phone—almost instinctively—handing it over to the other boy. ] wanna exchange numbers? If you're ever in Shibuya just hit me up!

[ the blond snickers. a band? that's a new one. ] Nahh we're not a band, dude. We're— [ oh no, Ryuji didn't think this through did he? of course he didn't. but how exactly is he going to explain what he does? or at least how he does it. maybe it's best to stick to the basics for now. he can explain personas, and palaces, and the whole heart stealing thing later.

Hell, yeah!! [ he's more than happy to oblige, pulling out his own phone and making the exchange with ryuji. after yuji taps in his digits, he takes a quick selfie of himself; peace sign and cheesy grin, and sets the image as his contact photo. ] There we go.

[ wow. yuji made a huge mistake thinking that the phantom thieves was a name for a band–! (although... it still makes for a pretty dope band name) ]

That sounds really cool, man. How's that going for you?

[ maybe one day, after all's said and done, the Phantom Thieves will live on as a band; and now that he thinks about it, that'd actually be a pretty sweet gig too! he'd be stealing the hearts of so many, but in a totally different way. what a concept. what instrument would he even play? he wonders to himself.

oh whoops! is he daydreaming now? he certainly is. so much so that he almost misses Yuji's question. how is that going for him? what can he even say? ]

Pretty freakin' awesome if ya ask me! [ it's rather endearing how proud he sounds when talking about the Thieves. ]

It feels so damn good to help people, y'know?

[ yuji's life kind of revolves around helping others. he's the kind of person that would sacrifice every facet of himself for it. ]

Can anyone join Phantom Thieves? How does it work?

[ this...is going a lot better than he expected. a little too well actually. he wasn't expecting him to be this interested, let alone eager to join. Ryuji greatly appreciates his enthusiasm all the same though; and is silently relieved that Yuji's not secretly a cop, or working with the cops at least. ]

Weeell...[ Ryuji scratches his head. can anyone join? ] not just anyone can join.

[ technically speaking. granted, there are many people who they'd consider allies as they've greatly helped the Thieves in their operation thus far, and Yuji's most certainly welcome to join their ranks at the very least, but the real question here is whether or not he can use a Persona—which is arguably one of the cooler things about being a true Phantom Thief.

[ still, Ryuji grins, it's a wild almost mischievous grin. ]

You gotta have a special "power" to join. It's...kinda hard to explain though.

[ at least for Ryuji it is. ]

[ Yuji looks in awe as Ryuji mentions that he would need a special "power" to be able to join his group. A special power, huh... Yuji excels in a lot sports, but he supposes that doesn't really count — Wait, does being a jujutsu sorcerer count?! Maybe it should! If Ryuji means special power in the literal sense anyway... ]

I see.

Well, I have some abilities...

[ Yuji tries to keep it vague since he's not sure if this Phantom Thieves business is anything like being a jujutsu sorcerer. ]

If you need a fighter on your team, I can definitely take on that role.

Uh-huh, uh-huuh. [ Ryuji nods. now it just feels like he's conducting some sort of interview, not that he minds. ]

Having some extra muscle on the team's never a bad thing in my opinion, but if you've already got some kickass special powers that'd be way better!

[ after all, raw strength will only get him so far in the Metaverse; but if being a jujutsu sorcerer worked anything like the power of Persona, then Yuji's already at a significant advantage. Ryuji could always just ask him point blank if he's a fellow persona user, but even he has a limit on how much he's willing to reveal about his friends. ]

You some kinda magic user, my dude?

A magic user? [ Yuji repeats while looking like he's thinking very hard about how to answer that question. Hmm. Should he explain what a jujutsu sorcerer is? He's not even the best person to explain what jujutsu sorcerers are in the first place.

Ryuji seems like a trustworthy person though. He's part of a group that fights to help people. Someone like that is automatically cool in Yuji's book. ]

Well. I wouldn't call it magic but I can control my own cursed energy and use it to fight others, but mainly cursed spirits. That's what's being a jujutsu sorcerer is all about! Have you heard of us?

Jujutsu...sorcerer? [ Ryuji scratches his head.

Yuji says he's not a magic user, but when Ryuji hear's the word "sorcerer" he still can't help but imagine that this guy's some type of magician. maybe a wizard? or he supposes if Yuji uses cursed energy, as he calls it, then perhaps he's some kind of witch? or a psychic? ]

Sorry, doesn't ring any bells. [ but they fight against cursed spirits? that at least sounds somewhat familiar to him, though Ryuji wouldn't exactly say the shadows he fights are curses per se. ] Whaddya mean by "cursed"? Ain't that usually a bad thing?

[ Yuji gives a nod cause yeah, "cursed" does usually mean bad things! ] I’m not great at explaining this but cursed energy is basically from our negative emotions. Like when you feel anguish or grief?

So years back, some people learned how to manifest that "bad" energy and used it to exorcise cursed spirits hanging around our world.

Some of these cursed spirits can be crazy strong though! It can take a lot of power to exorcise really strong and bad spirits.

Negative emotions, huh? [ as vague an explanation as that may be, it still piques Ryuji's curiosity a bit. he chuckles. ] Well, not to brag or anything, but I've got plenty of those.

[ anger, mostly. ]

Can anyone be one of these sorcerer thingies? [ though, a sorcerer and a Persona user? even if he can't be one, it's still a pretty neat concept to him. maybe they could even work together. ] How strong are these spirits? What's the craziest one you've ever fought? You gotta give me all the details, man!

[ well someone's excited. ]

[ Man, Yuji's not sure if he should go into too much detail with someone who's unfamiliar with this kind of world. It doesn't seem like Ryuji scares easy, but stuff like this could leave a person feeling paranoid.

But maybe it would be weirder for him not to explain further since he already started. ]

I think, technically, anyone can become a jujutsu sorcerer. But the special thing about being one naturally is having the ability to see cursed spirits without any help.

I know a person who's crazy strong at being a jujutsu sorcerer, but she has to wear these special glasses to be able to see cursed spirits.

[ The craziest spirit he's ever fought?? ... The one living inside of him, for sure. ] There are levels to them. The strong ones are really fucking strong. Like they could really kill you. [ Speaking from personal experience. ]

Wait for real? It's somethin' you can be born with? [ jealous! ] That sounds kinda badass!

[ though he figures not being born with it means no cool powers, right? figures. guess he would settle for some glasses too if he had the opportunity. would Yuji know where he can get a pair? ]

I bet glasses girl gives everyone a run for their money though, bein' crazy strong and just needin' to wear some glasses.[ he's even more curious now.

[ had he been the same person he was a year ago, the possibility of death constantly looming over him would have probably deterred him. too bad Ryuji's not the same person he was a year ago. having brushed up against death one too many times made his resolve that much stronger. Ryuji grins. ]

I'm sure I could take 'em down if I had that kinda power. [ weird flex, but okay. ] Wonder if I could even use my Persona t-

Er—! Forget I said anything!

[ nice going, Ryuji... ]

[ !!! What was that, Ryuji? Come on, man. Don't be shy to share with Yuji! ]

[ It sounds like he was about to mention something cool. ]

[ oh, it definitely is cool, but it's also technically supposed to be a secret...just like everything else he's mentioned that's also technically supposed to be a secret.

Gah—! Well I guess there's no point in hidin' it now. I use this thing called a Persona whenever I'm fightin'. [ and his is super cool! ]

It's uhm, kinda like this cursed energy stuff I guess, 'cept I'm manifestin' my "rebellious will" to fight these monsters called shadows. Some of 'em can be crazy strong too, but the Phantom Thieves always come out on top! [ okay, now he's just bragging. ]

So, you got any cool powers, my dude?

[ show him yours and he'll show you his. ]

Persona? Rebellious will? Shadows?!

[ This is a lot of new information but Yuji's doing his best to take it all in. Feels like a whole different world has just been opened up before his eyes! ]

Whoa, okay that sounds really awesome, dude. I wanna see how you bring out your Persona!!!

[ But first, by his tablemate's request, Yuji's gonna demonstrate how manifesting his cursed energy works.

Getting up from his seat, Yuji takes a couple of steps away from Ryuji - for safety reasons, of course! Once he's far enough, he balls his hand into a fist, and takes a deep breath. About a second or two later, his fist is suddenly engulfed in a ball of black and blue flames.

Yuji grins over at Ryuji as if to say, Heh, check this out! before giving a punch to the air. A huge gust of wind surges through the direction he had punched, not enough to create damage but enough to look impressive.

Satisfied with his little demonstration, Yuji then trots back to the table. ] Alright, your turn!
